Does all this "stuff" about designing DVDs seem confusing? Here are some imaginary examples of DVD configurations. Each list describes what is on the DVD:

"Info-mercial"
  • This example contains only one item: A single video track with one soundtrack. This "main movie" looks quite a lot like a television "commercial". That is because that is what it is.
  • There are no menus or slideshows.
  • When the disc is inserted into the player, the DVD player immediately starts playing the video.
  • When the video finishes, the DVD player plays it again. The video is played over and over again until the player is told to "stop" or "eject". This type of DVD would be suitable for use by a small vendor at a fair where a TV is set up at a booth. The video would show how the product on sale would be used and its advantages.
"Auto Race" Example
  • Single video track and one soundtrack. This "main movie" is a video of the auto race.
  • When the disc is inserted into the player, the first item the viewer sees is a "main menu", a still menu with a still image taken during the race. Each time the main menu is accessed, a different background image is used.
  • All menu buttons show a graphic of a car when a menu item is selected.
  • Three buttons are on the main menu: a "play video of the race" button, a chapter index button, and a slide show button. at the bottom is title text.
  • One slideshow consisting of digital camera images of the participants in the race. Each slide is accompanied by a soundtrack containing a brief verbal biography of that participant. Once that person's biography is finished, the slide show automatically goes to the next image and the viewer hears the next biography soundtrack. A particular slide can be skipped using the "next" button on the remote control.
"Training video"
  • There are many tracks, each containing a video track and several soundtracks. Each track is the visual equivalent of a chapter in a textbook. The soundtracks for each track include a lecture in English as well as French, Spanish, and Italian versions.
  • Subtitle channels are included for each language. One can be enabled using the remote or from a "setup" menu.
  • After each section is played, the viewer is quizzed on the previous content using a series of menus, each asking a multiple choice question. The right answers to each question must be answered correctly to proceed. An incorrect answer causes the educational content is repeated (or even an alternate version is played). After that a different set of questions about the same material are presented.
"Wedding"
  • A video track and one soundtrack. This "movie" is a video of the wedding itself.
  • A second video track and one soundtrack. This "movie" is a video of the wedding reception.
  • A slideshow consisting of favorite digital camera images taken during the wedding.
  • An additional slideshow consisting of favorite digital camera images taken during the wedding reception.
  • There are two "scene menus", one for the wedding and one for the reception.
  • When the disc is inserted into the player, the first item the viewer sees is a "main menu", a motion menu made of a split screen showing on the left a clip from the wedding and on the right a clip from the reception. Buttons are on each side of the screen. Selecting the left side button makes it go to a secondary menu for the wedding (having buttons for "Play movie", "Show still images", or "Chapter index"). Similarly using the right button brings up a similar looking secondary menu for the wedding reception.
  • If nothing is selected from the top menu (the "theme" menu) for 30 seconds, the DVD player automatically starts playing highlights of the wedding followed by highlights of the reception. The two highlights are two "stories" which get played in sequence. Anytime, this can be interrupted by pushing the "menu" or "title" button on the remote causing the player to go back to the top-level menu.
